AKA pride themselves on being the best rock covers band in the Midlands - and who are we to argue?
Full Review: http://www.24dash.com/content/lifestyle/reviews/viewReview.php?reviewID=211&navID=11 With 1980s and '90s soft rock - or cheese metal as we like to call it - as their major influence, you'd expect this Evesham-based band to be a bunch of long-haired losers in love with a genre that was never fashionable even at the height of its popularity. Thankfully, there's a tongue-in-cheek knowingness that makes renditions of Aerosmith's 'Love in an Elevator' and Van Halen's 'Jump' not only bearable but actually enjoyable - if you're that way inclined. What's more AKA know how to work an audience. By throwing modern rock classics like The Killers 'Mr Brightside' and the Kaiser Chiefs' 'I Predict A Riot' into the mix, their set is perfectly balanced in the sense that there's something for everyone. As a band they know their stuff. Each song has been lovingly replicated to sound exactly like the original, which in actual fact is quite an achievement as there are not many bands that can perform note-for-note renditions of Queen, Green Day and Nirvana songs all in the same evening. A couple of minor quibbles. Firstly, there was too much Queen for our liking. 'Fat Bottomed Girls' is fine, but are additional covers of 'One Vision' and 'Hammer to Fall' strictly necessary? Secondly, as a rock fan you want to hear more stuff from the rock greats such as Black Sabbath, Led Zepplin, AC/DC and Guns N' Roses and perhaps a little less from the likes of Fall Out Boy and Erasure!? That said, this was an excellent night out that provided plenty of opportunity to dance and sing along to songs that you wouldn't be seen dead listening to in the comfort of your own car.
